Drummer Victoria Djembe is one of Uptown's true community heroes. Through dynamic workshops and classes, she introduces the rhythms and traditions of West African drumming to community members across Chicago.

Diagnosed with autism at age three and unable to speak until age seven, the self-confidence and means of self-expression she gained through djembe drumming later inspired her to teach the craft to other individuals with autism and disabilities. She creates a powerful, inclusive space for expression and connection.

Victoria's devotion to her craft, and her focus on cultivating creativity and unity through music, is a testament to the strength of Uptown's spirit.
